The Morning Coffee Trap: Why Drinking It Right After Waking Up Drains Your Energy
Hey everyone!
In my previous article, we looked at my routine in Tbilisi, getting back to daily workouts after a long break, and building a smart supplement stack (wheatgrass, Omega-3, vitamins C and A). I mentioned back then that I deliberately delay my first cup of cappuccino rather than drinking it immediately upon waking. Today, let’s explore why that is, what science says about it, and how Dr. Eric Berg approaches this daily habit.
A Quick Note on Constant Evolution: If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ve probably noticed that I constantly experiment and periodically adjust my positions on various topics — whether it’s supplement stacks, coffee timing, or other lifestyle habits. Progress and personal development never stand still, and I strive to keep up by making adjustments along the way. Therefore, if you spot contradictions between this article and my earlier posts, it simply means I’ve gained new insights, changed my perspective, or fine-tuned my approach based on real-world experience.
What Happens in Your Body Right After Sleep?
When we wake up, nature has already built-in a powerful internal alarm system. During the first 30 to 60 minutes after opening your eyes, your body experiences a natural peak in cortisol production (known as the Cortisol Awakening Response).
Cortisol often gets a bad reputation as a stress hormone, but in the morning, it acts as our primary natural wake-up call. It mobilizes energy, boosts alertness, and smoothly transitions us out of sleep without any external stimulants.
What happens if you introduce caffeine right at that exact moment?
- Disrupting Natural Rhythms: Your brain receives an artificial surge of stimulation, and over time, it begins to blunt its own natural cortisol response. In simple terms, your body gradually forgets how to wake up on its own.
- Building Tolerance: Due to constant artificial prodding, your neural receptors adapt, requiring more and more caffeine just to feel “normal.”
- The Morning Crash: That sharp spike of energy from an early morning coffee is almost always followed by a steep drop-off a couple of hours later once the caffeine wears off and natural reserves are depleted.
Dr. Berg’s Perspective and Impact on Digestion
Dr. Eric Berg often discusses healthy coffee habits in his educational videos. He isn’t against high-quality black coffee per se — in moderate amounts and without sugar, it fits nicely into fat-burning goals and intermittent fasting routines.
However, the main issue with drinking coffee first thing on an empty stomach involves two factors:
- Adrenal Overload: Piling caffeine on top of your natural morning cortisol peak places unnecessary stress on your endocrine system.
- Digestive Irritation: Caffeine and organic acids stimulate gastric acid production. Chugging strong coffee on an empty stomach (especially for those who skip breakfast, like I do) can trigger irritation, heartburn, and general discomfort.
When Is the Best Time for That First Cup?
If not immediately upon waking, when should you drink it? Sleep and chronobiology experts generally recommend waiting 1.5 to 2 hours after waking up.
By that time, your natural morning cortisol peak has naturally tapered off, allowing caffeine to step in effectively when your body actually needs a lift, rather than fighting against your internal biology.
In my personal daily rhythm, it looks like this:
- Wake up \rightarrow glass of water with wheatgrass on an empty stomach.
- Complete my workout session (either in the morning or later in the evening depending on the schedule).
- Roughly an hour or two later, I hit the sweet spot for my first cup of delicious cappuccino.
- Closer to noon or 1:00 PM, I have my first actual meal of the day, where my fat-soluble vitamins and core supplements naturally fit in.
This approach helps maintain steady energy levels throughout the day without burning out your nervous system, letting your body function in sync with its natural rhythms.
